If Only Depression Had

If only depression had a smell,
A nice, rosy lighthearted smell,
maybe people would be able to sense the sadness,
maybe purple would be able to make it safe,
if only depression had a smell.

If only depression had a color,
a vibrant, all seeing, luminous color,
maybe people would be able to see the pain,
maybe people would be able to make it better,
if only depression had a color.

If only depression had a gesture,
the flick of a wrist or grasp of a shoulder,
maybe people would be able to see how bad it gets,
maybe people would see that we're hurting,
if only depression had a gesture.

If only depression had a taste,
a bitter, sour, remorseful taste,
maybe people would know how it feels,
maybe people would know how to help,
if only depression had a taste.

But depression had a feeling and a feeling alone,
it cannot be sensed, or tasted or felt or shown.
Depression is unpredictable and takes on many shapes and forms,
ranging from tidal waves and hurricanes, rains and storms.
If only depression had a smell or a color, a taste or a gesture,
but it's allowed to sit there, soak in and fester.
