If I were a Girl

If I were a girl
I hope I'd be pretty
I'd look more like my sister
And she was a model
So I think I'd be pretty
I hope I'd be pretty

I'd learn to wear makeup
I'd finally know the difference between mascara and eyeliner
And how to love them both

I'd learn to love shopping
It certainly would be more interesting
Because there would be so many more options!
I'm sure skirts are more freeing than pants
You think I like to wear plaid everyday
And purses are just so convenient!

I'd learn how to walk in heels
I'd learn how to hate walking in heels
And, I'd learn to wear them anyways

If I were a girl,
I'd be shorter
I'd be about 5ft 5 inches
Maybe even 5ft
I'd see the world from a different height, a different angle
But not differently

I'd still see the world’s rights
And it's wrongs

If I were a girl
I'd be paid less
I would work just as hard as any other man
But still paid less
I'd be treated differently

I'd learn to never walk alone in the dark
I'd learn how to go to my car with keys between my knuckles
I'd learn how 2 inches too short is an "invitation"
I'd learn to never leave my drink alone at a bar or a party
I'd learn that men are savages, and I just have to live with that
I'd learn that this is a man's world

I'd learn that so much of my self worth
Is determined by what I wear or how I look
I hope I'd be pretty

I'd still be the same person
Eat the same food, sleep in the same bed

Stare at the same mirror
If I were a girl
Nothing should change
