I Would Change Lives

Location

I wish I had the hands of God

So I could reach through

Broken suits made of skin

And change lives with the ink of a pen

I want to write a better world for you

I will make a new heart

For the girl who was named destruction

By boys with swollen fists

Whose kisses were scars on her wrists

Leaving her unable to function

I’ll change the end

Of that black-eyed boys story

Who’s sentences ended in a choke

After his neck twisted and broke

A noose counting flaws like inventory

I will use His hands for holding

The man who will stagger

In the streets and say “I love you” with fear

He feels the word “queer”

Like the point of a dagger

I’ll make homes with my words

For people like you

Whose definition of family is found

In the pain of their body hitting the ground

Or an empty church pew

I will rewrite our history

To straighten the bent backs

Of the women who hid their pain

Porcelain dolls on their husband’s chain

Covered in invisible cracks

I’ll change what has made you lose hope

What has left you alone

You painted yourself faithless

Stained glass windows made you anxious

But I’ll show you your not on your own
