I Hear the Barn in Winter Singing

I hear the barn in winter singing, the varied carols I hear,
Those of horses, their huffing breath as they dance through the snow
crystal cold,
The cats singing as they pad around the barn with tails twitching,
Dogs tumble through the snow as each snarls and bats the other
playfully,
Riders in the ring sing, intent on connecting, becoming
another muscle of the horse,
The instructor singing to her student, and the parent singing
as she watches
The bird’s song in the rafters, the owners' on their way to
hand out hay, in the morning, or in the evening,
The gorgeous singing of a quiet barn, and of horses peering,
holding one with an intelligent eye,
Singing surges through day, crescendos, diminuendos,
Players unite together in one rich, rustic sound, hooves
cant’ring in 3-4 rhythm
Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs.

I want it to be known that the first and last lines are not my own, except for where I substituted "the barn in winter" for "America." They are the first and last lines of Walt Whitman's poem "I Hear America Singing."
