I am Kentucky

I am the mountains and they are me,

I am their deep dark history.

I am the old mindset my ancestors had,

I am the folk stories that will make you sad.

I am the coal miner who dug his own grave,

I am the preacher who’s trying to save.

I am the long day and I am the short night,

I am the low pay and I am the burnt out light.

I am this blue grass that waves like the wind,

I am most surely your distant kin.

I am these hills that sit quietly,

I am the desire to set your heart free.

I am the tales told once in a blue moon,

I am the gambler, who has everything to lose.

I am where I’m from, I am where I was born, and from this old home, I’ll never be torn.
