I am

Mon, 01/19/2015 - 12:41 -- LaPoet

I am

The conspicious Coqui

Making myself one to be heard

Making my voice

One that is remembered

Not just for the volume

But also for the constiancy

The substance

In my soothing words

Running like river water

Through your ears

I am the beauty of El Yunque

My hair long

Strong

And brown

Like the rainforest trees

My heart filed with life

Like the beards and other wildlife

I am the sweet water of  a Cruz de Malta

My smile tainting the malice in a persons soul

I am the people of La Pearla

understanding the struggle

of living through dispair

of having beauty surround you

But feeling like an untravled dirt road

I hold the strength of the waves

Crashing every source of pain

Letting those who need a lift

Ride under my curling wings

I am the strength of El Morro

Only letting those who are on my side

enter my exclusive fort

I am the language

Speaking with rhythm

Every word being poetic

Giving romance a voice

I am the rythym of salsa

beating alongside your heart

pumping the blood through your veins

The rhythm that connects your body

to the skins of a bongo

I am the street rock of El Viejo San Juan

Having been stepped on

by so many words of widsom

having so many footprint

of others like

and unlike me

cross my path

My veins are blue

My heart is red

My skin is white

Tio is African

Abuela is Spaniard

Titi held the stregnth of Taino Indians

It's one thing to say you're Puerto Rican

It's another knowing what it is

So I can proudly say

"Yo soy boricua"

I am Puerto Rican

My heart is the island

my soul is the white star

I love my people

and we are all one
