How to describe the sense of smell to someone who had been born without it.

We have tastes, sights, sounds, and feelings as well,
But how does one go about describing a smell?
I found this intriguing, so I decided to give it a try.

A smell is a taste that sticks in your throat.
It may dance in your head or just bob like a boat.
A boat stuck in a whirlpool with one paddle, trying to row.

A smell is a sight you can see with eyes closed
Like the lines of an Etch-A-Sketch drawn up through your nose
A sight that is dark, a sight that is foggy or a sight that is bright as fresh snow.

A smell is a sound that rings through your head
A sound that is tinged with yellow and red
A sound that is sudden, but soft, that is sharp and is both high and low.

A smell can be welcome, or a smell can bring fear
It can seem far away, and at once, also near.
A smell can bring grief, anger, happiness, sadness and woe.

We don’t have the words for describing a scent,
And I feel as though we were never really meant
For a sense quite as useless, yet so important
As a smell.
