Hide and Seek
It was one of us.
Then it was two, as you emerge out of a sea of wheat.
The sky was a perfect blend of pink and orange, the sun
A stop light, putting the speeding car of time to a halt.
It slowly sinks into a purple horizon. I curse nature and your name
When I notice your shadow hide within the forest of yellow and
Deny the reaching hand of mine.
A warm breeze blows through the strands of the golden ocean of wheat and
Your hair.
“Where have you been?” I asked. You step closer.
“Everywhere,” you whisper. “Except for here.”
You stare down at her bare feet, the ones that would softly bump into mine
When we were stuck together like glue in a land unknown to the two of us.
You dig your midget toes into the soft, wet dirt. As I watch you fidget,
I imagine you shedding your skin like a snake, letting go of the disorienting memories of the past And freeing yourself from the burden of those who let you down.
“Find me,” I call to you softly.
I slip into the long grass, never to be seen again.
