Her Wish

A little girl,
all but 10.
Made her wish,
one wish to God.
She prayed and she hoped,
wished and believed.
Did everything she could
to keep them together-
but let down and beaten,
she lost the fight.

No help was given,
no reassurances handed out.
She cried that night,
and as the first star appeared-
she lost all her hope.

She changed her wish,
threw away her prayer.
She lost her faith,
and stopped believing.

No more did He have her heart,
the promise of her soul.
Bitter and angry,
she turned away.

She wished instead,
with all her heart,
that she could change who she was.
She willed herself to believe,
that if only she could be better-
then they wouldn’t have to leave....
