He Didn't Have To Be

From day one, when they said “I do”

You couldn’t tell our family was new.

Two worlds were sewn seamlessly together,

And I couldn’t ask for better.

He treats us like we’re his own.

He completes our home.

I remember the first time we met.

Stories like this don’t get

Much better. It all started one day

When we happened to cross ways

With Rob outside the rec center.

Our time spent in the park became an adventure.

Our mom had left us alone with him, you see.

So, me and him started to play Frisbee.

We were supposed to be keeping an eye

On my two sisters at the same time.

The Frisbee throwing had us beguiled.

So, we remembered my sisters after a while.

Maddie was nowhere to be found

We immediately scoured the playground.

She was located before Emily knew.

We kept it a secret from my mom too.

When my mom arrived

He gave me a bribe

To keep my mouth closed.

The pact was broken, our secret exposed.

My mom now knows.

She was informed years ex post facto.

From that day on, I’m pretty glad,

The gap closed between stranger and dad.

He coached my softball teams.

He wants to help me accomplish my dreams.

He helps me with my car.

He makes the greatest lasagna ever, by far.

He goes to events for NHS and FFA.

He takes me to Cardinals games.

He gives me rides to places I need to go.

He teaches me things he thinks I should know.

He gets on my nerves. We have our fights.

We’re both stubborn and know we’re right.

He says “Future Farmers of America,” but he’s wrong.

It’s been the National FFA Organization for a long

Time. I don’t always listen to him when I should.

If I had headed his warning I would

Not have fallen off the swivel chair,

Or have had pain in my derriere.

He doesn’t hesitate to tease me.

We may not always agree

Or see eye to eye,

But I’m glad he’s in my

Life because no one could be

A better stepdad for my family.

All I can say about all the things he did for me

Is that he was twice the dad that he didn’t have to be.
