Hamler, oh Hamler

I was drawn to her

because I think I knew we were

  the same.

Dry senses of humor covered up

deep seeded sadness (and insecurities).

I wonder if she ever

carved into her skin like

I did mine.

We both ended up flashing

heavy eyeliner and ripped skinny jeans

  for a year or two.

I was drawn to her

because I think I knew we had

  more in common

than what we talked about.

We both spent lots of time with

a man from the neighorhood

and he took advantage of me.

I think I knew

that he did the same to her.

She had to leave me behind in order to

  survive it.

I understand now.
