Like A Gunshot To The Heart

Like a gunshot to the heart

When you look me in my face and you tell me plain and straight

I don’t love you

Crash

I hit the ground with an astounding shatter

Somehow my mind is still intact

Though my heart and dignity are scattered about

Bang

It takes a second for the shock to set in

I look down to my chest to see

Red blooming where my heart should be

I stagger and fall to my knees

You seem not to notice

But who am I for you to notice?

Some young and hyper fan girl

Some wide-eyed, dream-drowned darling

Burning my wings flying

Too close to you

The tears are falling hard now

Singeing my fingertips like hot candle wax

I glance up once more to see if I’ve swayed you and maybe now you

No. You look away

And I find that if one of us will leave here with a shred of dignity

It will be me

So I stand

stumble

To my feet, ramrod straight

And walk on

Knowing one day there will be another pretty boy

For there always are
