The Greatest Country in the World (?)
War raging to the east
War brewing to the west
Can we really say
That we're doing our best?
Our economy failing
Our education becoming hollow
We're hardly a model
For others to follow.
We once were envied
Far and wide
For our defiance of Britain
Their ruler so snide.
As our country divided
Many thought we were through
But unlike theirs
Our Union stayed true.
And then as they fought
In their largest war yet
America stepped in
And stopped the German threat.
Established as powerful
A nation without fears
We led the whole world
For about ten more years.
But then we crashed
And took the world with us
But while they recovered
We still sat in the dust.
Again the world roiled
With war and unrest
And America stood by,
Saying, we're no longer the best.
But then up we rose
When provoked into rage
And won the war with a weapon
That changed the world stage.
We emerged as victors
Strongest once more
But across from us now
Stood another power, and the potential for war.
But this war was not
Something that we could fight
For if the two clashed
The whole world would fall into blight.
So instead of with weapons
We fought with our money
And the dark power fell
under the weight of a failed economy.
But the war took a toll
On the victors as well
And plunged the whole nation
Into a kind of Hell.
But few even knew
That Hell had arrived
And carried on oblivious
Because their leaders had lied.
They put off their problems
And labeled them solved
Leaving it to another generation
To make these problems resolved.
But the new generation
Was not informed of the danger
And tried to improve the rest of the world
As equality was their wager.
They thought that they had to help
Every nation, every people less fortunate
But more than they thought
They themselves were unfortunate.
Still today we try
To save the rest of the world
But at some point we failed to realize
That our own sails had been furled.
We push on stubbornly
Determined to fix our troubles
Without losing our comforts
But regularly our problem still doubles.
How can we climb out
Of the hole we are in
The hole into which we climbed
To help others win?
We tried to pull others out
But instead they dragged us in
And now those whom we managed to save
Are standing at the top, laughin'.
Our lifestyle of extravagance
Still pulls us down
As those who choose our actions
Have little more intelligence than a simple clown.
But now we shall rise
Tired of being stepped on
To restore the pride
That once we relied on.
Yes, we shall rise
And again we will be
The United States of America
The greatest country.

Hmn, American patriotism really isn't my thing, but I really love the historical lesson you gave me here. Really concise and to the point.
I love the lines:
"But then we crashed / And took the world with us"
This line stands on its own. The rest of the poem is so literal and so factual and this poem seems... the most abstract. I like it.
Your use of rhyme is impressive. I think I will attempt to do something like this.
What was you inspiration for this poem? I wrote something very similar to this. You should check it out.
