Of earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and tempests
I know not much, only the beggar’s pleas
Trembling hands that cannot endure the whole test
But of these I know some greater tragedies

Of hunger and thirst, of homes in the dirt
I have not known, only children’s cries
And a widow’s unrelenting guilty hurt
But of these I know some greater tragedies

Of abuse, torture, and unspeakable crimes
I hide in fear where the weak has no choice to flee
The persecuted long for the least of horrid times
But of even these I know some greater tragedies

Of ignorance, forgetfulness, and temporary care
Money no comfort to the one that dies
Awakening the selfish eyes a sight so rare
Of these I know no greater tragedies

Years after the earthquake hit Haiti, that country is still struggling. I suppose this was my original inspiration, and from that came other thoughts about the wealthier first-world countries being more than equipped to show sincere care to such impovershed nations. America, as many other places, show immediate action at first, but very few are commited to giving up a little bit of their abundance for those with nothing.
