Frustrations of Student Teaching
I wake up at 5:30 every morning
Just 5 more minutes please
Just 5 more minutes…
Just 5 mo…
Oh shit! What time is it?
5:45 I'll eat some cereal
But how do I decide,
between Roundy’s brand cocoa krispies
or Aldi’s brand cinnamon LIFE …
Either way I need milk, no milk?
Was it my turn? No… I bought it out of turn three times.
Thanks roommates, for leaving me alone over break,
with no Milk.
Not the best start to the day. Now I have to go to school.
Not my school but your school
where most of you are pretty cool
but often times you make me feel like a fool
for looking forward to coming here.
Little do you know,
but attitudes are contagious and yours
are somewhat outrageous with
your bipolar sides and comments.
Why must you criticize and NEVER apologize
and always over emphasize a mistake I might make.
I may not be your age anymore but
I don’t think you realize what I am here for.
You take advantage of the position I am in,
of the things I do not know,
of the things that I say. You tell me “yes ma’am”
but turn around and do the opposite…
and you call for MY respect?
Put yourself in my position
trying to finish my schooling but you never listen
always penetrating my division which
was made to keep you out…
of my head which you are always searching
for the crack in my defenses.
What reaction do you want from me?
Do you want me to cry or yell or scream?
You wait for my mistakes
so that you can go ahead and take
that simple phrase I may have said and turn it on its head…
“Don’t tread on me” as they say
but you try to make me pay for
something that I did NOT open my wallet for.
I have a duty and a job to do,
to do the best that I can and you too,
to constantly try my best for you,
and to finish so that I know who,
I want to be in two months.
No matter how shitty you try to make me feel…
I know I will never kneel
to the power that you try to steal from me.
It is my prerogative to take this derogative
and show you an evocative way to be positive.
Your negativity can’t bring me down,
WONT bring me down
and in the end I will resound and stay up off the ground
to hear the sound “Congratulations on graduating college. Has it really been five years?”
Yes, five years in college but 17 as a whole.
Maybe Grad school is in the future,
And maybe I have the cahones to be a teacher
Especially after this placement
I know I can feature the best demeanor that I can muster up.
I have the strength and the power and
I know that I will never cower to the overpowered
Odor which is sour that seems to secrete from your
Thoughts and words.
Ill take what you have taught me and
Put it in the back of my mind when I have my own classroom
Because what frustrates me the most?
Is, I was just… like… you!
Respect is not just a word
Or a song that is song by powerful singers and musicians
It’s a way of life and a thing that everyone deserves.
So I suggest that if it’s not to me you will serve?
Think about the last time you deserved this word and
Were denied it. “Give and you shall receive.” Some words to take to heart.
You want respect? You MUST. GIVE. IT. TO. GET. IT.
You young ones have it easy.
Don’t make those around you miserable because you think you are ALL THAT.
You are NOT the cats meow and need to know how
To respect those around you Ahorita, or right now.
“The best way for evil to succeed, is for good men to do nothing.”
Don’t let the trend continue, BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE in the world
And positively too please because there is enough negativity
And death on the news. If you want that? Turn on the TV.
Be polite and acknowledge your mistakes take responsibility for
Your inability to let things go. Patience is a virtue and you must
Become the sinews of the nation and the future generation.

This is a very truthful poem, and expresses the feelings that I am sure many teachers have. Not just in teaching, but in general, respect is something that should be given and received by every person and it is important that everyone knows this fact. Maybe you could read this poem to students you teach or even other teachers, and it would be a wake up call for those who truly need to learn what respect is and how it works.
