I felt love for the first time.
It had to settle amidst sinews and synapses before I’d noticed.
It came with your smile,
Cemented by your laugh.
By surprise, it took me.
I hadn’t realized nor diagnosed the symptoms.
A stomach that would flutter so, I feared it may take flight.
Lips that curled at the mere thought of you.
A turning in my gut during its transformation to stone
At the sight of your affection for another.
Yes, this was love and whatever dread would accompany it.
The first.
You were my first love,
But surely you won’t be my last.
This thought consoles, as I know you aren’t mine and never will be.
Although, I’ll never tell you this, I thank you.
For now I know what I’ve questioned and feared.
I have a heart.
