Ethnicity

Ethnicity, What is it?

Oxford says it's,

The fact of belongings to a particular race or culture.

So what is my ethnicity?

You see, I could be sri lankan,

Its where my parent are from,

What my skin is adapted to,

Why my hair is so long,

Why my grandparents believe in the things they do,

I've worn their sarees and sung their songs,

But I don't go around to everyone who isn't sri lankan,

And tell them that I won't hang out with them.

My friend is from the Caribbean.

Her hair like a cloud,

I've witnessed her traditions,

Her Christian religion,

So in those moments with her,

And her ancient traditions am I black.

I have friends and family,

They are French, German, Dutch.

I've gone to their homelands,

Visited their landmarks,

Interacted with those who are seas apart,

Am I not also connected to those countries.

And all my Arabic friends,

Though I don't wear their clothes,

I give them hugs,

And travel as well,

So why am I not Arabic.

And the ethnicity,

Which i interact with,

Follow, listen to,

Every single day,

Its white.

Sia ain't sri lankan,

But I listen to her songs,

And while I wear sri lankan clothes,

Once in a while,

I walk and sleep most, in white attire.

Most of my friends are white,

Why wouldn't they be,

81% of our country is white.

Yet despite it all,

I'm told I am sri lankan.

Because that's the race our leaders want to keep me in.
