Elegy/Free Verse
Oh, sweet mother of mine!
How fortune has left your side,
And left your lifeless limber intertwined,
With that of your true love, confide,
The smoke that consumed your heart,
Speak the night that shattered me;
How I shall overthrow my fright?
To forever be robbed of my family
And to truly despise the sight
Of those red burning flames
And to awaken to your screams,
Every night, I fear it is I to blame,
For my foolish stroll near our stream,
If only He whispered an urgency,
Savior would become my name,
And my feet would have carried me,
This guilt now would be tamed,
It is a dear shame,
That my path has gone astray,
And now I suffer with the image that will lay,
With me forever,
Oh, sweet mother of mine!
