Don't Look Away
You’re driving.
You’re flying by in two tons of aluminum and plastic,
or maybe in one of those classic cars made of steel.
When you know you should watch the road, you chose to become distracted
by your cell phone. At that moment, you agreed to make a deal
with the devil.
One text for one soul.
You chose to be the next one.
With one look away and just like that, it’s done.
Texting isn’t the only issue.
Aside from texts, most distractions are caused by the detachments we have from the real world.
We daydream because we need to relax from our struggles from the day.
But one day, maybe today, it can be the day you are sent to the underworld.
You can no longer stay
amongst us if you took your life,
because you chose to look away.
Not only do you leave behind a wreck but also make your loved ones strive
to accept you not being there and no longer theirs.
Daydreaming is a driving nightmare too.
Not only can reverie and texting can preview the words “the end” for you,
but the food that is meant to keep you alive can end you, too.
Concentrating on that burger or sandwich can endanger lives
on the road and on the sidewalk. You chose to look at the handful of fries
instead of directing your eyes to the road because of how delectable they are.
Meanwhile you forget the delicacy of staying alive
in order to witness the deliciousness of many foods, one bite at a time.
Eating while driving is more dangerous than you think.
Don’t make your loved ones drink the most bitter of all teas
- the reality- of loss
by getting distracted by the food you’re eating.
Eating gives you a chance to take your last bite.
We can stop these problems if we all work together.
If we promote the need to fix this we would no longer see lives taken forever
by the recklessness of distracted driving.
Let's take texting for example.
Phone companies should create ample software that prevents the use
of your phone if your it picks up the speed of a moving car.
This is the twenty-first century.
We have the technology
to save lives by taking off this preventable noose
While travelling near and far.
Lets use it.
We daydream for a reason.
We are tired from the day, we or because have the energy to think about future plans.
For Daydreaming, instead of dreaming as an attempt to achieve eternal sleep,
Try getting sleep the night before, a rested head can make you drive your best.
If you have a lot of future plans do, take a deep breath and relax. When the time comes to
do what needs to be done, envision your possible decision later by prioritizing your driving before anything else.
Lastly, there’s hunger.
We all get hungry at some time of day, but we must avoid it in the car. Why not try eating
before you turn the ignition, therefore beating
the hunger before it catches you. How about grabbing a quick snack instead of a meal?
It can’t be that big of a deal if it’s just a small candy bar before getting behind the wheel.
It will temporarily quell the beast that is your desire to eat, while having enough time to reach your home to have a feast for dinner.
But in all seriousness, there is no winner by getting into an accident because you accidentally chose to get distracted.
There are other forms of obstructions that need to be expressed.
Every type must be equally stressed
but what I covered are unequally the most common types that must be addressed.
In rain, sleet, snow, or shine, no matter what time of day,
when you’re in charge of controlling two tons on four wheels,
don’t look away.
