On the Devaluation of Students in Modern America's Higher Education System

Ten men in thinking caps judge my every move

They stare right through but ask me to prove

My worth.

"Why should you study here?" they ask.

I reply that the A's prove my competence with any task

"Impressive, your grades may be

But so can he, she, they and we.

Dance the Dance, that's what we want to see!"

"What if I never learned the steps? Isn't there a place for me?"

"Well look at those kids doing our tricky waltz.

They have gone on for years without a single fault."

"What about when you look away?"

"It never happens, but when it does we trust what they say..."

While the men stuff dollars in their pockets,

the dancers' feet go from 3 steps to 2.

"...but you, what can you do?"

"Well I have no rhythm of which to boast,

Nor alternate talent on which to coast.

I have but one simple yearning.

That's my honest thirst for learning."
