One night, when I was very young, I awoke crying, as young children often do
There are evil demons, I said, evil demons running through
There are no such demons, said my father, go back to sleep
But I could not, would not sleep, I continued to weep
The phantoms I thought I saw were angered, they quickly became true
Down to the basement they dragged me, by my shoe
No! No! I screamed, I fought back tooth and nail
But the demon was much too strong, inevitable was my fail
The basement cellar door, opened with a creak
Me thrown inside, door slammed with force not weak
Scraping closed, the finality of the lock
Body slumping down, total was my shock
When would morning come? I didn’t know
But when the door finally opened, I glimpsed the face of my foe
Not some monstrous vision, not some horrible sight
But the face of my father, so filled with hate that night
Demons come and demons go
I fear most the ones that I know
