To Day Or Night

Whence comes the frightful night
That e’er travels in such rude delight
And wherefore does it cause strife
Cutting hearts like brutal knife

Or is it merely some damp-friend
Which in cold warmth does descend
To bid some comfort from wayward day
And ne’er compliments prices we pay

For dawn is often called friendly
For it means the night is ending
Yet some fear day more than night
For it is day which bares their plight

And so to which end we bend
To which is foe and which is friend
That either may swallow us as victims whole
So is it day or night which innocence stole
