Darkness

Tremble little birds
Fluff of brown and white
Feel your hearts a shudder
Made of cinder’s light

You may have day ‘til dusk
Play, live, lust
But when the moon arises
So will the terror of the night

From my den I wake
Wings unfurl an inky darkness
Whiteness shines from teeth and claw
I can’t wait or bear to pause

Tonight I shall take my fill
Beware, my hole
Shake and shiver in your nest
While you sleep: fear

For you may be next
My dear
