my dad

he was absent for most of my birthdays and major holidays

as a kid i was confused and upset

i mean didn’t he love me?

didn’t he want to see his family?

it wasn’t until i was 9 that i realized why

he was working two jobs

both had poor pay

both required lots of manual labor

yet he did this for years so that i could have what i needed

and even wanted

from new shoes to candy

he provided it

it’s from him that i learned the most important lessons:

get an education,

do that you love and love what you do,

work hard because things won’t come easy.

i’m grateful to have learned these lessons early on

they are the reason i'm in college now,

the reason i'm pursuing a degree in a field many have belittled,

the reason i know that i will fall but as long as i get up things will be ok.

My family
