Black is thick eyeliner,
My hand stained and sore from writing.
Black is expression and pain,
The walls in the theatre and my nails tapping on the table.
Grey is the Oregon sky,
My life passing by monotonously.
Grey is numbness and depression,
Beautiful eyes and the lies I tell to survive
White is the pages of a book,
A scale reading yet another disappointing weight.
White is simplicity and insanity,
The wings of a dove and a padded cell.
Pink is a princess dress,
The blush of a girl’s cheeks when she’s shy.
Pink is hope and happiness,
Neon lights and girl power.
Red is the velvet curtains of a stage,
Blood glistening in self-inflicted wounds.
Red is rebellion and freedom,
A robin’s chest and my prom dress twirling.
Orange is a fire,
The garishly-painted gym at the high school.
Orange is irritation and happiness,
Hunters’ vests and Halloween.
Yellow is an aging book,
The very center of a daisy.
Yellow is cowardice and cheerfulness,
Smokers’ teeth and sour lemons
Green is the forest,
The gorgeous eyes of a friend.
Green is life and serenity,
Wood-elves and nymphs.
Turquoise is my bedroom walls,
My tribal-style feather earrings.
Turquoise is vivacity and bubbliness,
The crashing Oregon waves and my new favourite shirt.
Blue is my nose stud,
My eyes as a kindergartener.
Blue is love and loneliness,
The birds in our yard and my bright eyeshadow.
Purple is butterfly wings,
A queen in velvet robes.
Purple is gracefulness and spontaneity,
A dancer and my boyfriend’s hair this summer.
Brown is my sparkling dress,
My cell-like room at the treatment center.
Brown is neutrality and death,
Squirrels and rotting logs.
For no two people are colours the same.
Some associate red with roses, some with blood.
To some, blue is sadness; to others, beauty.
Each colour evokes a response.
The world is a rainbow,
Seasons and colours.
The world is beauty and emotion,
People passing by and all of their stories
