Click. The sound that has followed the black people through both the good and the bad:
Click: The colonizer’s guns cocked and pointed at Africans.
Click: The clinking of the glasses of “rebel leaders” now come to power.
Click: The doctor uncapping the AIDS antiretroviral needle.
Click: The chains binding the slaves to the boat.
Click: The sounds of the plumbing in “colored” bathrooms.
Click: The ballot counter for Barack Obama.
Click: The cell doors of Mandela, X, King and queens alike.
Click: The sound of you imitating how “Africans” speak.
Click: The fronds of a homemade windmill powering a village in Malawi.
Click: The locks of a car door as I walk by.
Click: The flat iron against the counter conforming her to someone else’s beauty.
Click: A father opening the door to play with his kids.
Click: The keyboard as we tell our stories.
Click.
