Center Stage

Location

The girl across the wing,
Behind a curtain so fair,
Knows her true and flawless self,
And has a secret to share.

With a partition separating herself,
From the critics beyond the stage,
She walks to her dressing table,
And gazes into her cage.

When she looks into the mirror,
What exactly does she see?
I know that I do wonder,
"Who's that girl staring back at me?"

Her eyes are far too dark,
Her nose is far too small,
Her hips are far too wide,
Her height is far from tall.

Her split ends are too many,
And freckles are too few,
Imperfections are all over,
But tell her something new.

As she reaches for the mirror,
The curtain starts to slack,
She turns out toward her audience,
And she's taken quite aback.

Beyond the girl in the glass,
Beyond the curtain so broad,
Stands a girl who is confident,
Behind her fair facade.

She casts aside public opinions,
With the radiance shining within,
She bursts through media standards,
And cuts away their world of sin.

With her strengthened personality,
A spotlight shines above,
She's through with the lines of hate,
And prepares a script of love.

She looks past her imperfections,
To the girl who lies beneath,
Releasing her inner confidence,
From its battered and broken sheath.

To some she may seem timid,
Too brash, rude, or mean,
Maybe a little strange,
But she truly is a queen.

Her performance is astounding,
And she takes her final bow,
Thankful for her burst of strength,
Yet always wondering how.

As the curtain begins to close,
She expects to fall and fold.
But she remains a perfect being,
With perfect strength, heart and soul.

So what if she isn't thin?
Beautiful with mystique?
She is perfectly fine,
Being intelligent and unique.

And as she looks into the mirror,
Fingers gliding one last time,
She knows who she is,
And that's more than just a "fine".
