Can I Be Beautiful

Can I be sexy with short hair and high-rise briefs

Be born with a smooth chin

What a relief it must be

Can you see thru those lashes

Skin free of blemishes

How can I be pretty like you

How can I be desired through and through

How bout instead of being pretty like you

I'm going to try being pretty like me

My body

is not a place for their

undeserving hands

Nor a sight for their deceiving eyes

My divinity consists of solid mind

Mind, matter, and melody

You don't have to understand the songs that I sing

My voice is deep

Or at least they say for a woman

My daily consumption is that of a mosquito

Some days I swat it away

They say to inhale the bite

I fight for generations

Saying "weve had enough"

Can't scare me with no chains

Can't poison my lunch

I refuse to be tied and scarred by whippings

I refuse to give in to the fear in oppression

Speak peace on this heart

Hate dont leave no impression

My obsession with Black Lives Matter is not an obsession at all

We all fall down when can not stand tall

Stand tall amongst each other

Blessed, my brothers of color

They taking yall out one by one

Whether you're holding a man or you're holding a gun

As Maya once told me be Woman Phenomenally

So too will I be black Unapologetically

Yes I be woman and yes I be black

And black is beautiful

Check our nutrition facts

Watch close as our hair defies gravity

Every man on this Earth has come from our genes

Be born with a dimpled chin and find the relief

In knowing that I am beautiful

As beautiful as me.
