The C Word

Location

He never sleeps
He only hides
He jumps out
And yells surprise
In the dark
When the sun is down
Erased the smiles
Replaced with frowns
Sucks out life
Covers up the light
Turns bright mornings
Into dark nights
Attacks the ones
Who live the most
Picks their bodies
To be his host
Some cannot defeat
But they are not weak
They are strong
Their bodies: meek
No one knows
Who made him be
The darkest one
Starting with C
He takes away
The ones we love
No "excuse me," said
Just a push and shove
He makes us all
Hate goodbye
Breaks our hearts
And makes us cry
Puts strong hearts
To the test
Becomes much more
Than a tiny pest
Perhaps one day
He'll go to sleep
And leave us all
Alone to weep
Until the day
He will take his leave
We will wait
And try not to grieve
He never sleeps
He only hides
He jumps out
And yells surprise

In memory of Dennis A. Sechrest. 1945-2008
