I have seen more battles than a seasoned warrior.
I know more stories than a minstrel can sing.
I have seen more death than even a graveyard has
I have seen more darkness than even night can bring.

In halls of gold, I did abide.
In my youth, I knew a noble prince.
In my days of glory, I was ever at the king’s side.
And to all the king’s battles I went.

But those days are no more.
The king fell.
And I fell into the hands of a man poor.
In a humble hut, I did dwell.

For years uncounted, there I did abide.
Three masters I knew; and a fourth
Whom had me by his side.
And from that hut we went forth.

He won glory during the fight.
The king gave him many a gift;
And he was known everywhere for his might.
A full life he lived.

When he passed from this earth,
I remained with his kin,
Witnessing both sorrow and mirth.
But unused I was again.

Then times of trouble came.
Once again I was with a knight.
But that would be my bane.
And my last fight.

During that battle of death and pain,
I did what I was made to do.
But I was not to do those deeds again.
My hours left were few.

Then in that battle, Alas!
The knight fought well,
But his life did pass.
Yet, of his deeds no stories tell.

After his death, I was found.
A desperate, last knight,
Still stubbornly standing his ground,
Saw me in the fading light.

He picked me up on high!
He shouted out his battle cry!
He still would continue to try;
Even though his death was nigh!

He didn’t win the victory.
But he kept his honor.
Never to be remembered by history,
He lied amongst the battle gore.

But I too was broken;
No longer shall I be at anyone’s side.
There is no grave for me to go in.
Yet, I have not truly died.

Forever shall I lie in this field!
For as long as I remain,
I shall remember those killed;
Those who found their bane.

But time will claim me.
Who then will remember them?
Those who wouldn’t flee?
Who will remember those men?

A broken hilt am I.
Left to forever lie
Looking up to the sky,
As the years pass by.

Forever I will recall!
Remember how all those men did fall!
Remember how they answered duty’s call!
Remember how they stood tall!

For I have seen more battles than a seasoned warrior.
I know more stories than minstrels sing.
I have seen more death than even a graveyard has.
I have seen more darkness than night can bring.
