The dark pigment of my skin does not determine who I am with in or what I can grow to be I refuse to follow the roots of my family tree, for generations we as a people have been kicked back and held down, force to drown in a lake of slave mentality but it’s time to claim my crown it’s time for me to wake up and face reality, education is power and without it your nothing I can’t continue this cycle of poverty and the struggle, for years leaders died fighting for our right I feel as if we owe this back by making something of our lives, time is winding down and it waits for no man being the first person in my family to attend college would be a huge command, I guess that’s why my mom’s had so many regulations and lessons to never fail god and always count your blessings, worriers never cry but how can you cry when there are no tears left inside, I got to get out, I can’t be held back, I got to survive my dreams will not be deferred because I wear them on my back, and its weighing me down but I will never let them fall even if history tends to repeat its self I got to break this cycle once and for all generations to come
