Boy Crazy
Six by Fifth grade
Twelve by Sixth grade
Sixteen by Ninth grade
Twenty by Tenth grade
Twenty, and then him
Twenty, and then it stopped
She can still name all of them, if she thinks hard enough
But she knew the difference between an attraction and a crush
She knew that all were lust, that none would've lasted
She knew the difference, but she was duped
And she's still getting over it,
But that's not the point.
The point is that she kept track
Six
Twelve
Sixteen
Twenty
Twenty
Twenty
Because he was number Twenty.
Suddenly there, in her mind all the time
He was her thoughts when she went to bed and
When she woke up in the morning
Everyone else was suddenly dimmer in comparison
And she knew this had never happened
With two or five or seven or thirteen or sixteen or nineteen-
With whom she was still yearing-
But not even he got as near as what she felt with Twenty
Twenty, with the blond shaggy hair and blue eyes
Twenty, who somehow outshone nineteen others
Twenty, who's name she had never heard, had never dreamed of hearing,
But now could never imagine a world without
And she prays for him, because she loves him
And she was fooled by Nineteen
And she thought that was love
Until Twenty came along
Twenty, with his tall slim body
Twenty, with his love for puns and comedy
Twenty, who couldn't bear when she was sad and
Hated when she didn't speak to him and
Loved her laugh but would never admit it in a million years
She saw number Twenty and didn't notice until
He had already imposed into her life
They were like two flavors that didn't work,
Her secret longing the taste of cream that is slightly too cold
His assumed indifference like butter on warm but stale bread
His Twenty the perfect number to her,
Because she didn't even realize she had been searching for
That last number until she found it
Six
Twelve
Sixteen
Twenty
She can garauntee to herself that she will have another number soon
But she won't have another One
Because he is the only One
Even though he is also Twenty
He is the only One
for her.
