Being Myself, a Person of Color

Location

So, I'm out here being myself but all the see is color
Not blastin', twerking, not even a young mother
I'm out here being myself but all they see is fame
They see dollar sign, gold watches, girls, and chains

I'm out here trying to get educated so my mind I can freely speak
They see me better of on the corner, in section 8, or dead on the streets
I'm out here trying to get educated so my younger brothers I can teach
They see me better off working from pay check to paycheck and selling weed
So I'm out here trying to be myself but all they see is color
I'm not blasting a gun, twerking, nor am I a mother

I'm out here trying to be a better me but that's not what they see
They see a light skinned black girl who only cares about "the D"
I'm out here trying to be a better me but that's not what they see
They see another black girl's body, easily consumed, who doesn't have guidance and doesn't know her Daddy
So I'm out here trying to be myself but all they see is color
I have never blasted a gun, don't really know how to twerk, and don't have plans on being a mother

Now, I'm out here fighting for my right to be me
I'm out here screaming, shouting, refusing to accept defeat
I'm out here fighting for my right to truly be free
They have taken my mother's freedom, I'll get back hers and a little bit for me
I'm out here fighting for the right to be me
They only want a higher death toll, drugs, money, and People of Color poverty
I'm out here trying to be myself but all they see is color
I'm thinkin' I should consider education on guns, rethink the history of twerking, and help those who are young mothers

"I'll lead by example", that's what I think
But while I'm out here being me,
I realise the things I can do to help them see
I'm out here being myself to please them when I should really be being myself
to please me
So now, I'm out here being myself but all they see is color
They can think whatever they like, I'm me and I'll never try to be another.
