Being black in America 2013

Sun, 06/16/2013 - 12:33 -- Jendi

I worry what a professor thinks of me the first day of class.
I need to work more than the white, Asian, and Hispanic students to prove I'm not a slacker.
I'm always cautious about what I say, and how I say it.
I spend more time working to prove people's stereotypes wrong.
When I walk into a store, I'm paid close attention to so I don't steal.
I sometimes surprise certain people when I articulate myself well.
When policemen pull me over, they're surprised I have no offenses.
The chains of blacks have long been vanished, but the chains are very much felt.
