Because I'll Always Love You

She met him in high school

He was sweet, he was fun.

He was smart and so kind,

She knew he was the one.

They fell in love and they grew,

Went to college, four years,

At the end of that time

Wedding bells rung in their ears.

They were happy in love,

Said their vows, said “I do.”

As they danced their first dance

He said “It’s because I love you.”

They started off great

They laughed and they loved.

But the more years went on,

Laughter wasn’t enough

He came home from work

He was tired, she could tell.

She tried to console him,

But he just started to yell.

The yelling got worse

The older they grew.

He’d scream and he’d shout

And started hitting her too.

“Because I love you”

Or “It’s for your own good.”

Were things he would tell her,

So much she withstood.

She hurt and she cried,

She tried to get out.

But the more that she ran,

The more he would shout.

Eventually his yelling

Became too much to bear.

She hid in her bedroom

And prayed a short prayer.

The next day he came home

Unusually upset,

She was nowhere to be found

His palms began to sweat.

He dialed her phone

Once, twice, then ten times.

“Come home” He would plead

“I know I mess up sometimes.”

He cried and he begged

Then suddenly he knew

“Baby, I need you back with me,

I’m sorry, because I love you.”

She listened to his messages

She thought and she questioned

These words he was saying

Were words he’d never mentioned

“Maybe he’s changed”

She thought, “He’s okay.”

Then she turned her car around

And decided she’d stay.

When she reached home at last

To his side she flew

“I’m home baby, I’m here,

Because I love you.”

That night they discovered

What had been gone all those years.

They fell back in love

There would be no more tears.

But the next day again

Home from work he came,

His temper was flared

And she was to blame.

Her spirit was crushed.

She knew in her heart

This love that they had

Was falling farther apart.

She asked him to leave,

She had tears in her eyes.

She was very convincing

Soon they said their goodbyes.

As he trudged out the door

Her words were only a few

“I’m only letting you go,

Because I’ll always love you.”
