Angel of Mine - Poem for Mama
I glance at you and there you are
Standing next to me with your hands locked in mine
Filled with calluses from endless hard work to ensure that bills were paid on time
Never skipping a beat when dancing to that famous song called life
Smiling in a smile that money couldn’t buy
Singing lies to me that you wasn’t hungry whenever you never joined me at the dinner table
And now that I’m able to understand the complexity of your sacrifices for me
The reality revealed it wasn’t enough food for you to eat
Never sweated a bead when that person who planted your seed was never there to watch a flower like me grow
Never once did stress diminish you faith but if it did you never let it show
through the darkness of trials and tribulations God still made your aura glow
Arms thick with love to protect me whenever the devil wanted to destroy and kill
You fought my gory battles while you protected me with your shield
Your skin smooth and dark like chocolate resembling a Nubian queen
Laced in elegance because on a thrown is where you where destined to be
I place you on a pedestal where my deepest respect resides
Your eyes like dark gold because they are the windows to your soul
Wisdom in your hairs weariness in your feet
But joy in your heart because you are an angel to me
I close my eyes and I picture you
Standing next to the man that molded you into a masterpiece that I adore
With wings stretched so broad as you soar through my life forevermore
Dressed in a snow-white robe embroidered in the finest diamonds
Addressed as your highness eating only the finest fruits that grow on a prosperous tree
You and me I envision, walking golden streets to the places that faith will let us go
Staring at your golden halo that illuminates your head down to your toes
Placing my hand into you delicate hands and never letting go
A place where it never rains a place where there is never pain
Just you and me beyond the pearly gates where only he knows our name
