In This American Dream
A Fresh Start, Opportunities
A Better Future, Freedom
These constitute
The American Dream
A Fresh Start
For families escaping poverty, violence
Escaping a future filled with nothing
Except
They can’t escape
Not their home country, not the violence
Not the hunger for more
Escape isn’t an option
When the refuge builds a wall
To keep out the poverty and violence
To protect itself
A Fresh Start
Isn’t possible
In this American Dream
Opportunity is the next step for those that can make it
New life and jobs
They say those that work hard enough
Those that want it enough will earn it
Eventually.
So they work, work, and work
Two jobs at a time with minimum wage
Eventually,
They’ll make it and get a better job, but
Eventually
Never comes
Opportunities are limited
When their competition never had to work
For their good life or their good job
Because they were born Here
They never had to work, work, and work
To take their place
Eventually
In this American Dream
A Better Future for the kids
Because it’s not just about You
It’s about Them
Giving them a Jump Start to life
Without poverty or violence
About giving them The Golden Opportunity
So they won’t have to work, work, and work
To have A Better Future
But that’s it, A Better future
Not
The Best Future
Because the futures of your kids can’t be better
Than the futures of Their kids
There isn’t room for Outsiders to have
The Best Future
In this American Dream
Freedom
Of Religion, Of Speech
Of Press, Of Assembly
They are the Core--The Foundation--of
The American Dream, yet
They are ignored
You may practice whatever religion, but know
Wearing a hijab makes you a
Terrorist
Speak whatever words, but know
Defending rape victims makes you a
“Femi-Nazi”
Publish whatever you’d like, but know
Posting your opinion makes you an
Attention Whore
Assemble for whatever cause, but know
Protesting for your rights makes you
Wrong
In this American Dream
A Fresh Start, Opportunities
A Better Future, Freedom
These constitute
An Idealistic Pipe Dream
The answer to “Make America Great Again” is
To embrace the differences between us all
To welcome “Outsiders” as people and
To help each other achieve greatness
That is My American Dream
