The Fish
Location
Sail
Together, I see,
The power of the wealth of belief
Though my friend just beside me has died in his sleep
Sand in his hair, he belongs to the reef
The ominous sad is released in high tide
Submerged in red liquid, I’m no longer dry
Sail
The undertow pulls
Above soars the bliss in the ignorant seagulls
I can’t move under water, my limbs are too feeble
Society
Salt
Caught in the drain
We are white, we are black
We are one in the same
Bending compassion
Conditional love
I picked up a snail and it died in my glove
I row and I paddle, the ocean is dim
I was rocked off my boat and forgot how to swim
Sail
The waves are screaming
The guttered souls rolled in scum
His brother treads, bleeding
But wait
Something’s holding my hand, it’s a fin
“It’s okay,” cooed the fish, “I’ll reel you back in”
Sail
The sea angel lead me to safety
Where is my home now
This makes sense?
Maybe
The salt was cleansing in delusion but in my truth healed few wounds
I smile anyway
My limp body swoons
I tilt my head sideways and wink at the moon
I now look at the water,
A small child laughing
Myself
I remember the summers of saltwater taffy
