My comforter in Distress

I was introduced to poetry in 8th grade.
At first, I didn’t understand it
It seemed confusing and strange;
A message that couldn’t be grasped easily
However later on I realized poems are more
Poems shouldn’t be understood easily
For they are thoughts that come from deep inside us.
Through poetry I can now release my emotions
My thoughts and feelings lie on a lined sheet of paper
I write whatever I feel through poems
My thoughts and emotions are my own
No one can take those from me
I can speak my mind through poems free from judgment
Poetry gives me a sense of freedom and liberation
As I go back and look at my previous work
I see the places I’ve been,
The chaotic turmoil I have lived
I realize that poetry has helped me through it all
Poetry is my comfort
