The Plight of Pompeii

Pompeii!

Who knew it would happen in the wake of your day;

Vesuvius in one sweep would take your whole city away.

All go about the business of their normal day’s task;

                                                             Unaware that

Through Herculaneum a black cloud would soon pass.

 For

It is there within the swelling ground

Beneath the soles of their feet

A fire god is seething

With an anger of insatiable heat

Suddenly!

A cataclysm of quakes, smoke, fire, rocks and gas,

Enclose one and all

To sleep

Forever

 In gray tombs of ash.

From the past up to the present

An archeologist finds,

Objects that echo the fate of a people

Of a long before buried era and time.

Leaving their

Ancient bones to be chiseled

From stone, clay and brick,

Hidden

Treasured fossils of history

 Discovered,

A time capsule,

 Uncovered,

Puzzling pieces of a tragic story to fix.

 Records of what took place

On that apocalyptic day,

When Mount Vesuvius rained down fire

On the sleeping city of Pompeii.
