So Fair and Foul
God, I hate the way that Shakespeare speaks,
Even though I studied him for weeks.
I can’t help feeling that I’m kind of lost,
I can’t even think of such a cost.
Looking at a board and writing down,
The things I won’t remember years from now,
At least I learned a thing and for the best,
The thing of iambic pentameter.
Iambic pentameter, you say like this
Hopefully none of the words you’ll miss
“When thou hold'st up thy hand: O, let me kiss
This princess of pure white, this seal of bliss!”
I think I may have made my point by now
It’s really quite good if you know how
To write in iambic pentameter
But don’t just stress over a single letter.

How now, thou silly pug of slowèd rhyme?
What say thee for thyself in such a time?
Thou talkest blab and cannot understand
The ground that built the writing from thy hand;
O darst thou say much ill of Shakespeare,
And Iambic pentameter that you fear;
But come to me when slowèd rhyme doth say
That poetry is what you write today.
