Arrange desks/chairs in the classroom in a circle to create a warm, supportive, interactive space for students and teachers to communicate
STUDENT DO NOW
Review PowerPoetry's "Word Warriors 1: Feedback- The Poetic Kind" Action Guide from Lesson #5 to become familiar with commenting on/critiquing the work of peers
MINI-LESSON/ACTIVITY
The class as a whole will have 10-15 minutes to discuss:
The definition of empathy
What it means to provide positive and supportive feedback on each other's work
How to be a caring, effective listener
For the next 7-10 minutes the class will review PowerPoetry's 5 Tips for Writing a Narrative Poem
Students will have 10-15 minutes to write a brief narrative poem (5-10 lines) based on a personal experience
The remainder of class will be devoted to students volunteering to read their work aloud and have their classmates offer respectful, supportive comments related to both the poem itself and the story presented in the text
