Weeping Willow
As I lay my head by the weeping willow tree
I think:
I am more than just a statistic
I’m intelligent, quick-witted
Reform is the antecedent
To achieve the peace that’s needed.
And if you don’t know what I’m saying, look it up
Instead of running these streets amuck
Testing your luck
Putting your life in the hands of someone who doesn’t give a fuck.
My voice rings high as these chains strike low
My entire being captured by the weeping willow.
It’s got a hold on my soul
It’s something hard to let go
They’ve dragged me down
Taken my crown
I can’t get off the ground
Without fear of hearing the sound
Of a click
Of a scream
Of the gun
That has killed me.
The weeping willow hears my cry
As it sways freely; releasing my anguish to the sky.
Don’t be blind
Open your eyes
We lay paralyzed
By the heart of a nation that’s imprisoned by corruption and lies.
That was my brother,
Who died at the hand of a man
Who walks freely in this land
Without as much as a sideways glance.
That was my sister,
Who cried for her rights
That one fatal night
Before she supposedly “took her own life”.
My heartache sinks into the bark of the tree
And the weeping willow carries me
Into parts of my mind that is carefree
Even if it’s only momentarily
I let the weeping willow sweep away the anger and the rage
Without a positive mind, how can we truly stand for change?
The change must be within me to spread positivity
It’s not hopeless, just take a look at our history
Their stories are the reason I write
I fight for their justice through the letters I type.
