Athletes... And then Humans

I’m not much of an athlete

I’m a better spectator

Than a real player

What would I do without sports

Without the athletes

Who dominate on and off the courts

They’ve inspired me to work hard

Defy odds, become a better person

They’ve taught me that success

Is nothing but hard work’s reimbursement

They keep their heads high through defeat

Shake hands with their opponents

And stay upbeat

They’re willing to take the blame any time

But more importantly,

They put the team on their back

When the game’s on the line

They’ve only got one entity in mind

The trophy, nothing less

Not a piece, but the whole pie

But every career comes to an end

Time starts to take its toll

But this is not the end

They left their mark on the games

They wrote in blood, sweat, and tears

With the same handwriting of hard work

And then signed different names
