Towards A Better Place

When I gaze upon a starless sky

I’ve always wondered why

Man must have an ambiguous fate

When heading towards a better place.

I ask this question simply because

I truly wonder how long it was

Since Man found himself a fitting pace

To walk on towards a better place.

Man seems to exist for mere circularity

With constant fluctuating prosperity.

For Man is certainly the only race

That dreams of heading towards a better place.

From the beginning till eons after,

As stated once by Willa Cather,

Man may travel at a much faster pace,

But is he aiming towards a better place?

Sticks and stones were chosen and picked

To whack a rival with a lethal hit.

Does that vicious path in our genetic case

Lead us towards a better place?

The swords were forged to sever and slice

And sweep off heads and take their life.

As death in arrows fills this space,

Is this how to head towards a better place?

Cruelty surely knows no bounds

With every weapon that Man has found

Like the catapult or the deadly mace.

Is this how to head towards a better place?

Man gave birth to many thoughts

Which often ended in war, if not

With silenced souls plastered with too little grace.

Are we on our way towards a better place?

And soon enough Religion was born

Where the slightest differences have easily torn

Man away from the brothers he’s faced.

Are we heading towards a better place?

Only Man will lead his brothers to war

Till the other side lives nevermore.

And with each victory he claims it’ll take

Him certainly towards a better place.

With every cut and slash and whack and hack,

There is certainly something that Man does lack.

If his direction is off by the slightest mistake,

He’ll certainly fall short of a better place.

Though many, many millennia have passed

Has Man finally found at last

The almost certain and flawless way

To lead him towards a better place?

Bullies and tyrants have always existed

From Nero to Stalin, though we’ve certainly missed it.

Many men have claimed even till this day

That they know how to head towards a better place.

Global wars with figureless deaths

Have encumbered the World with lives ill-spent.

Generals and Kings and Presidents mandate

That they know the path towards a better place.

But the action they’ve decided to use

Leaves us stripped of our choice to choose.

They send our sons and daughters away

To fight and die for a better place.

The old sticks were quickly abandoned

With every gun Man got his hands on.

At one point the weapons even had a race

To see who would first reach a better place.

Yet Man has ended so haphazardly divided

To the point where everything is still undecided

About the direction in which Man now faces

And if he’s really heading towards a better place.

In all this time the answer eludes

The entirety of Man from head to shoe.

He continues life at a blissful pace

Oblivious of seeking a better place.

Think about it now in Ukraine

With all the souls shot dead with so much pain.

The potential of those souls are now displaced

As Russia finds herself a better place.

And even now as I live and breathe

Starving children are begging on their knees

As they die in Syria, of all the places,

And are cut short from a better place.

A ship had been sunk in reefy shores

Off the coast of Korea and is no more.

A selfish captain had killed hundreds that day.

Are we heading towards a better place?

Even society has done, indeed,

To turn a blind eye to those in need

As greed and apathy take up space

And, instead, redirect us from a better place.

But despite all the tragedy, there’s still a chance

That Man shall move on from his atrocious past.

Our thoughts can mold reality into our existent space

And sculpt a path towards a better place.

Man’s final chance entirely lies

In the time when he can finally realize

That he, himself, is what he has made

To travel on the path towards a better place…
