dear boy i almost gave everything to,
i am not a glistening bar of solid authentic gold,
i am not a crystal clear 50 karat diamond,
i am not a smooth pearl that shimmers in the sun.
i am a ruby.
One beautiful morn, so fresh and oddOn a distant crag, a man did trodHe raised his blade to hew a perchAnd from the gouge three stones did lurchThe first was quite pale and buffed to soft green
Everyone wants to be a gem,
They yearn to become
Their ideal cut.
Diamonds, rubies,
Emeralds, opals,
All beautiful gems.
Most of us aren’t born gems,
Some have to be shaved,
