I originally hail from Liberia, a coastal nation on the West Coast of Africa. Until our country was ravaged by more than a decade of civil war, it used to be a wonderful place for raising a family or going on vacations. Sadly the war changed all that, and with the loss of almost a half of a million lives we have had our share of pain and suffering. Yet in all of this our resolve was never broken, and we still found a way to overcome our greatest shortcoming. Even though l now reside in the US l still think about my nation and pray that we can make it a nation where children can roam freely and not have to worry about things like hunger, war and premature death. For as long as l can remember l have always loved to read and to write. No matter what l find myself going through, a paper and a pencil will soon have me oblivious to whatever is going on around me. Writing was a way out for me during the war and it helped me to not only maintain my sanity, but to also document what was happening to and around me. So it is worth highlighting that the power is still in the word, be it written or otherwise, and it behooves us to continually challenge ourselves to make sure the written word prevails and stands the test of time.
