Young Crow

Young crow dreaming
On a wire
Swinging on the wind
Above the fire
Of the sun on the wheat
Baking in the heat
The earth couldn't be any drier

Young crow walking
On a wall
Stalking through the field
At a crawl
Keep your eyes on the grass
How the day does pass
As the summer gives away to the fall

Young crow standing
In the gloom
Crane your neck to hear a distant tune
The glow from the tents
Now the day is spent
Are lighting up the furrows like the moon

Young crow staring
With your eye
Trying to understand the carneys cry
The big top is up
The boys are drowning in their cups
You shouldn't hop so deep into the rye

Young crow standing
In the ring
You should have stayed on a wire
watched the wind thrash the brier
instead of coming here
spotlights blind and sear
Bow low
feel the undertow
it's all going to follow you into the hole
Rhyme breaks down
Song melts out
the elephants can't hear the ringmaster shout
the moment of sorrow
facing the sound
Young crow you shoulda
nailed your wings
To the ground...
The throb of your heart is
the only last sound
As the wind takes the roofs
off the houses in town...
You should known better than
jumping around after things that you don't understand...
