As a child I watched her speak'
different tongues of the english language.
Her attire always professional and powerful.Rather
than letting a family fall to pieces,
like a dying tree rotting in the forest from disease,
she successfully and with mastery pulled the family apart
like a soldier does with his guns: trained for combat.
This soldier has the ability to carefully piece back together a weapon.
Now no longer a weapon to anyone, rather a functioning way with society.
A family once drowning in anger and confusion, rests peacefully
Peacefully upon a shore among others that the soldier saved
From other oceans of confusion, from divorce to adoption
Better people and better lives because of her
Gratitude for her utmost grace.
Surely she must have shared her own share of family struggles.
She is within and without, helping and struggling,
Drowning and breathing.
Susan is a family lawyer, my family’s lawyer.
She is within and without as I am.
I strive to do the same, to be within and without,
to save what should not fall to pieces
within a family institution.
