The Wilderness

Long did I wander in mountains of green

Around me was nothing of man to be seen.

My friends and I walked across mountains so high

It seemed we could reach up to touch the blue sky.

No longer a boy, I walked as a man

Far did I travel by water that ran.

I saw the world, and knew what was mine

Not the mountain's great oak, nor the trailing vine.

I wandered so small, so strong, and so free

Beneath the bright stars that were made just for me.

Surrounded by beauty, my spirit could soar

And walk on the clouds before Heaven's great door.

When I returned home, I knew something had changed

The boy that I was had been left in the range.

Now I am a man, and I know what that means,

Although all I had was just flickering dreams.

The man that I am is not something I made,

But something I found within a deep glade.

My friends and I wandered, and now we are men

Because we found beauty in one mountain glen.
